The Snowball Effect: Documentation and Training for Global ERP Systems

The Snowball Effect: Documentation and Training for Global ERP Systems

Once upon a time, a major manufacturing company implemented SAP to handle all of their North American operations. Several years passed and the company implemented new SAP modules and fine-tuned existing modules. Everything was working well and they were getting a good return on their system investment. Finally, it was time to start bringing the wonder of SAP to the company’s global operations.

The company was smart and planned a phased global implementation over several years. First they went to countries south of the border where a different language was spoken by many. So, the company scribes (Instructional Designers and Documentation Specialists) and their SMEs created materials in their native tongue and sent them along to another company to translate into the 2nd language. But alas, the screen shots were still in the 1st language! The translators did not know SAP and the scribes did not know the

If You Keep Practicing, You Will Get the Hang of It (or Thumbs Up for Rock and Roll!)

If You Keep Practicing, You Will Get the Hang of It (or Thumbs Up for Rock and Roll!)

For the last couple of summers I’ve played in an “over 40” adult soccer league. Last summer, I scored my first and only goal. It’s not that I’m skilled by any means; I just happened to be in the right spot at the right time and had the presence of mind to aim and kick toward the goal.

Unfortunately, the rest of the time I run around the field like a chicken with my head cut off (a metaphor that I can picture all too well after spending summer days as a youth on my aunt’s farm).

I can’t attribute my lack of soccer skills to being unfamiliar with the game. Over the last 18 years (the age of my oldest daughter), I’ve seen over 500 games and watched countless practices. I’ve seen highly-skill players and coaches demonstrate core foot skills.

I’ve just never practiced.

Anyway, I signed up …

Analyzing the ROI of Social Media in Training

Analyzing the ROI of Social Media in Training

A continuing theme among my blog posts has been the difficulty of demonstrating the ROI of social learning initiatives.  We know that they work, our clients find that they work, but there’s not always a lot of hard evidence out there going in to a project.

In no realm has this been more evident than in our constant encouragement of the use of internal social media networks as a crucial benefit-multiplier for any employee training project.  As has been noted in a number of posts here on the Social Learning Blog, including “Collaborative Learning Lessons from Wikipedia (and Small Insects)” and “The $2 Whiteboard Shows Power of Peer-to-Peer Learning”, while a core curriculum of base training material is essential to spark the learning process when new technology or processes are being implemented, it is when people begin talking that the really handy learning begins.  We frequently …

Brain Rules for Learning: Who Knew? We All Did.

Brain Rules for Learning: Who Knew? We All Did.

Recently, I was lucky enough to attend a keynote speech by Dr. John Medina on his book Brain Rules at the eLearning Guild’s Learning Solutions 2011 conference.  When I think of Dr. Medina’s address, especially among the many I attended that week, some words that immediately spring to mind are enlightening, engaging, exciting and energizing….pass the alliteration please!

First of all, you should know that Dr. Medina is a developmental molecular biologist, research consultant, and Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Washington School of Medicine. You might wonder why Dr. Medina was speaking at a conference for eLearning professionals until you see this last credit…He is also the director for the Brain Center for Applied Learning Research at Seattle Pacific University. And when you hear him speak, you can tell immediately that the man is fascinated with and passionate about how the brain takes in and organizes information; the essence of learning.…

The Renewed Importance of EHR Training – Meaningful Use Incentives

The Renewed Importance of EHR Training – Meaningful Use Incentives

Since the beginning of last year’s health care debate, we’ve all been hearing a lot about Electronic Health Records (EHR), and the promise they hold for saving money and improving patient outcomes.  Despite hefty price-tags for initial set up (running to $60,000 per physician in some cases), these babies hold the promise of extensive savings that will more than offset initial investment in the long term.

And yet, by the estimate of the Department of Health and Human Services itself, somewhere between 30% and 50% of all clinical practices that attempt to implement an EHR have given up before the process was completed – often at the cost of thousands of dollars and countless hours wasted.  Why?  Simply put, in most cases failed EHRs suffer from the same symptoms that are seen in countless other IT implementations: insufficient staff buy-in, insufficient training, and an ROI that is often slow to …
